Recycling cigarette butts, it’s time to act!

Leftover cigarettes are everywhere. To limit the damage to the environment, think about recycling cigarette butts !

Source of several health problems for smokers and those around them, cigarettes are nevertheless very popular. Unfortunately, the environment also suffers the negative consequences. Moreover, cigarette butts are even categorized as poison for the ecology. Cigarette butts contain a lot of harmful substances and are hard to recycle.

Think about recycling cigarette butts scattered in nature to limit their consequences

You have to think about recycling cigarette butts because a cigarette and a cigarette butt contain the same components. The butt contains all the harmful substances of tobacco. These are radium, ammonia, tar, cellulose acetate, etc. These are all elements that are harmful to the environment, as they take up to a dozen years to fully decompose.

Thrown in the ocean or in a river, the remains of cigarettes dirty about 500 liters. Multiplied by the number of cigarette butts thrown into the sea, the figures are substantial.

According to Planetoscope on an international statistic, 137,000 cigarette butts per second are abandoned in the four corners of the world. In one year, this figure reached 4,300 billion cigarette butts scattered in the middle of nature. Among other things, these cigarette remains cause more than massive pollution.

How does cigarette butt recycling work?  ?

Still unknown to the general public before, recycling cigarette butts is possible. Moreover, there are a few companies that are dedicated to it in France. As the processes are not yet finalized, these entities are still in full research.

First observation of recyclers, the relationship between the number of cigarette butts thrown away and those processed is alarming.

The recycling activity focuses on the transformation of cigarette butts into plastic plates. After sorting, these cigarette remains are crushed before being converted into compost. Indeed, both tobacco and paper and ashes are biodegradable elements.

Then, in order to dissolve the molecules, especially those of nicotine, the compost will undergo decantation with water. The latter will be purified before being filtered a few times with clay, in order to be depolluted. While the remaining toxic sludge will be sent to toxic waste to be treated, the cellulose acetate will be reused. Combined with recycled plastics, we obtain a material that can be used to make ashtrays and outdoor furniture. However, the profit of this process is still small at present.

Better than cigarette butt recycling, quit smoking

Another way to limit the harmful effects of cigarettes on the environment is to stop using them. It is a permanent solution vis-à-vis the ecology and especially in relation to your health. Indeed, the benefits of a healthy lifestyle primarily benefit those concerned.

Either way, this is not an easy thing to do. However, there are fortunately different forms of support and mobilization to support future non-smokers. Doctors and pharmacists can also advise you in this step.

In the meantime, at least throw cigarette butts in the trash and not on the ground or in nature. Even if the option of recycling cigarette butts is not yet fully effective, there is already a specialized sector for sorting them. This is the incinerator where cigarette butts are sent.
